"Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable." - Matthew 13:34
It's been said that parables are "earthly stories with a heavenly meaning." But they're so much more than that. These stories are Jesus' way to offer invitations to the crowds into the abundant life he came to offer.
For some of us, these stories are brand new. For others of us, these stories are the first stories we were told. They're familiar. But if you listen closely, these stories aren't conventional. They're filled with plot twists, surprising heroes, and shocking revelations. When Jesus tells a parable, he isn't treading on familiar territory. Rather, he's breaking new ground that comforted the afflicted and afflicted the comfortable.
